Hollywood Celebrities Call on UN to Act on Burma

More than 25 Hollywood celebrities, including actors Jim Carrey and Dustin Hoffman, have written to the UN, urging the world body to take action on Burma and calling for the release of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest.

"This courageous, brave woman whom many call 'Burma's Nelson Mandela' should be released and the military regime should end its attacks on civilians," the letter said. It called on UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to “personally intervene” to secure her release.

Actor Jim Carrey posted a message on the video-sharing website YouTube last week urging Americans to join a global campaign on behalf of Suu Kyi.

"Aung San Suu Kyi is not just a charismatic leader, she is the elected leader of the Burmese people," said the letter, whose signatories also included actors Owen Wilson, Susan Sarandon and Jennifer Aniston and Irish singer Damien Rice.

The letter campaign was spearheaded by the Human Rights Action Center and the US Campaign for Burma, both based in Washington.

“Famous actors can speak up about Burma through the media so the UN Security Council can know about this Burma civil war disaster,” Jeremy Woodrum, the campaign director for US Campaign for Burma, told The Irrawaddy.
